June – July 2023

I adore clay. I have many happy memories of playing with it as a child. Molding and remolding it into different shapes until it became something fun and/or useful. I built a clay model for my GCSE art exam, and attended several workshops in using clay for sculpture. The texture, the malleability, the subtle fragrance; all these properties of the clay engage the senses and encourage imagination. As with all craft forms playing with clay helps mental health, it also helps with dexterity of the hands – an important exercise if you have arthritis. It is open to all generations and skill levels and brings everyone together in joy and inspiration.

Our June meeting had a queue right out the door, which said to me that so many other women felt as excited as I was to get theirs fingers working and creating. We reached capacity quite quickly and unfortunately some people went away disappointed. Our wonderful speaker/faciltator, Jo, had never had an adult audience before (so I gather at least) but, as I hope I alluded to above, playing with clay takes me back to a childlike, carefree time, so perhaps the only difference is that we didn’t put clay in each other’s noses or ears.

Apologies that this months blog is shorter than previous months, I have not had as much time or energy due to temporary work commitments. We are looking forward to seeing you in July. Until then enjoy the weather but stay safe and hydrated.
