The De Beauvoir WI is an inclusive, fun and sociable community group. We are open and welcoming to all women of all ages in the local area. We meet on the first Thursday of every month and our aim is to organise enlightening meetings with activities and speakers to cover a wide range of topics and interests. We also give back to the community by working with other groups and actively supporting local charities.
In the past year we have formed a close relationship with Solace Women’s Aid, a charity working with survivors of domestic violence. Among other vital work with this client group, Solace run refuges across London for women and children fleeing violent relationships. When each family arrives at the refuge, often with very little, they are given a welcome pack which includes essential items like toothpaste and toothbrushes, a towel, shampoo etc. Every month at our meetings we collect donations from our members of items that are included in the welcome pack and then deliver them to Solace where they are distributed among the refuges.
We also help run the local Community Café in the Crypt once a month. The Community Café serves home cooked food and tea and cake every Friday lunchtime where people can get a three course, hot meal for less than £10. Any profits made from the café are donated to the De Beauvoir Welcomes Refugees project.
Monthly meeting time and venue: first Thursday of each month at 7.30pm in the Crypt of St Peter’s Church, Northchurch Terrace N1 4DA. Join us for tea, coffee and cakes.
New members can join at any time by coming along to one of our monthly meetings. Guests are also welcome (£5 entry fee).
We are part of the Middlesex Federation of the Women’s Institute. Membership for the 2018 calendar year costs £41 which gives you access to all of our meetings plus all the benefits of being in the National Women’s Institute.
